FYI: LiveJournal is getting rid of the "Basic" (no ads) account.

Everyone who has a free account now still has a free account. However, everyone who chooses to create a new LJ will have to choose between Paid and Plus (with ads). [livejournal.com profile] brad's journal goes into a good description of this and also relates how he feels about it.

Yeah, I'm not too happy with this. I know they're a company and they need to make money and all, but...ugh. I hate the idea that if you don't want to/can't pay, you *have* to look at ads.

*shrug* I went to a plus account ages ago (when it came out, I believe), because I wanted the cool features. I don't even notice the ads anymore.

I can see why it would definitely annoy people though.

Same here.

I'm wondering if my paid account expires will it go to the stupid ad-based crap?

I prefered SixApart, thanks. If Vox had communities....

i agree. i hate the way they're running things, and how they put Brad on the advisory board and totally ignored him(not that putting someone on said board guarantees that the board will follow that person, but i doubt they even let him say more than "hello"), but i'll never leave LJ.

While I'm glad that Dana and Brad share our sentiment that this decision sucks, it blows even harder that they were overruled and not advised of the choice, much less asked to chime in on it. Lame.

This is why everyone must use Firefox, install* Adblock and Greasemonkey (and the LJ Ad Remover script once you have Greasemonkey), and never see ads on LJ again! (Or anywhere else - between Adblock and Greasemonkey, you really can get rid of just about every annoyance on any website you look at.)

*Please note that 'install' means 'click the install button and it does it all for you', which means it is utterly moron-proof and lazy-bastard-proof. I accept excuses from no one. ;)

I understand that there are bound to be overheads and wages and things, but somehow I doubt that they require quite the amount of money they seem to be making off this. This will pretty much kill off all the RP communities and no one will be able to make a spin-off journal anymore for anything. LJ has now turned into a business instead of just a blogging site, and of course, they're forgetting the main thing about LJ which is that it requires people. Keep pissing everyone off like this and they will just leave. I keep wondering why I stay but I've been on LJ for five years and there's nowhere else like it. Vox is SixApart, DJ is ..well... dead, JournalFen is so weak in comparison... and I have no idea if GJ or IJ are any good. I really don't like the idea of moving everything, that's like my life there.

not to mention that the other J sites just don't have the amount of people LJ does. I've been on GJ(which is kinda like a big icon community, in my opinion), and it sucks, so does DJ. i don't really care about the ads, because i have a paid account, but it definitely sucks for the RP communities. maybe they'll all go to Yahoo! Groups...that's where i RP.

I think the problem with the others is that they're all offshoots of LJ and there's no one that's better than the rest so people are all divided between them. I know some of my friends are on IJ, others are on GJ... which one do I choose?! LJ has been far and away the best for such a long time that it has no real competitor. Mind you, if LJ keeps pushing people away as it is doing, the ranks of the others are going to swell. It just depends where most people go.

I suppose there's always Blogger...
