I've had this stray cat for two weeks now. In those two weeks, I've put up signs everywhere I can, listings on every website imaginable, and I've only gotten
two inquiries about her. One phone call last week from a woman who lives in the neighborhood and then an e-mail today from a woman who's on the complete other side of town, recognizes it's a long shot, but still wanted to contact me anyway. Unfortunately, neither of the women are the owners of this stray cat, so she remains in our spare bedroom. I'm fairly certain that I won't find her family. :-/ I've talked to several animal rescue groups and they've all told me the same thing- they're full because it's kitten season, but if I can hold onto her, get her healthy, and foster her for awhile, then they might be able to take her.
The stray cat isn't doing as well as she should be. A week and a half ago, I took her to PetCo's low cost vaccine clinic and got her vaccinated and tested for fiv and feline leukemia. Luckily, she has neither. I also sent away a fecal sample, and while I don't have the results of that back yet, I'm fairly sure she's negative for worms (I dewormed her the first day I got her, in addition to poking through her poo looking for worms).
But she's not gaining much weight, despite the fact that I'm feeding her kitten wet food every day, in addition to dry cat food. She's currently five pounds, 12 onces. Which is
really small, especially considering her age (5-6 years old). She should weigh about twice that. Because she hasn't been putting on much weight, I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow. Not the PetCo vet, who only sees the animals for less than a minute while giving them vaccines, but a real vet visit with my family's vet,
Gwinnett Animal Hospital. I called them yesterday and got a quote for how much an exam and blood work would cost and today I called to make an appointment and request a discount since 1) this is a stray cat and 2) my immediate and extended family has been loyal customers for
over 20 years. Luckily, they're giving me a discount (albeit not a big one), so I've got an appointment for her tomorrow morning at 11:30.
I have to admit, this whole process has been pretty frustrating and discouraging. Even with my connections to vet's offices and animal groups, I still haven't gotten very far. I called ten vets in our area, asking if they did low cost spays or vaccines for stray cats, and none of them did (even the ones who advertised it on their websites!)- they all quoted me at about $300.
Project CatSnip is great- it's only $45 through them, but it doesn't really lend itself to people who work because of the hours you have to drop off and pick up the animals. We don't qualify for any programs that are based off of your income because we make too much. I even had my "Found Cat" posts on Craigslist flagged and deleted because I put them in the "pets" section and not the "lost and found" section (it was the first time I've ever posted to CL, too). It's been so incredibly discouraging. Unfortunately, there just aren't many places that help you out for doing the right thing anymore. She's such a sweet cat and I'm just trying to help her out, but it seems like everything is against me. I was nearly in tears yesterday when I called my vet's office and they said they would help me out. I'm just so thankful that amidst all of the rejection and difficulties,
someone is willing to help me out.
I just wish I could change the world.
