As many of y'all know, my family has a decent-sized farm, with a forest, fields, and a creek, all of which bring a lot of wildlife into the area. We encourage the wildlife to find solace and a safe place within our land- we love them (duh) and we really enjoy living with one another in harmony.
Dustin and I bought my parents a game digital camera so they can take pictures of the wildlife on the farm. Since my mom got THREE deer feeding stations for Christmas, we thought the camera would be a good gift so they can see the deer. Before my dad set up the deer feeder stations, they decided to try out the camera on the deck, where they feed the raccoons.
They don't just feed the raccoons by putting food out on the deck, though. Oh no. They don't want to feed the stray cats or the opossums, they just want to feed the raccoons. So after several prototypes, my dad created a raccoon feeder station that forces the raccoons to stand up on their hind legs and reach into two empty peanut butter jars in order to snatch the cat food out of the jars. This allows the raccoons to eat the food while preventing 'possums or cats from eating it. The raccoons love the feeding station and visit nearly every night.

Back in the summer of 2003, I rehabbed nine raccoons- five of them, four boys and a girl, I raised from infancy. I named them after the Beatles- Paul, George, Ringo, John and Yoko. John and Yoko escaped from their cage a few weeks before I released the others, and they ran away into the woods together, forever to be wild. Paul, George, and Ringo weren't so lucky, but that's another story. *sigh* Anyhow, John and Yoko are still running around in the woods. This is John. He's always had a short tail. :-)

John again, back two hours later for another snack.

One more of John, at nearly 5 a.m.
There's also another raccoon (Yoko, I presume) who also visits multiple times per night, although she didn't come that night.
The camera takes three pictures every minute, so Mom and Dad had a bunch of pictures to look through when put the sd card into the computer. I'm glad they got some good pictures of Paul and I really can't wait to see what other pictures they can get- either of raccoons, possums, squirrels, or deer!

Date: 2008-01-12 06:29 am (UTC)As soon as I saw "game camera" I had a flashback to this thing I saw on some hunting show once (why on earth I was watching it I don't know, I think it may have been when my dad was here last month and i just happened to be in the room) that they were using to see whether or not and when there were deer in an area, taking a few pictures a minute, the same thing only I didn't know the name for it. Cool to see it in a use other than searching for things to kill;-P
