Warning: Beaver pictures under the cut.  Dead beaver.

So it could get to the middle line.  :-(

Close up of the tail.  To prove it really was a beaver.

It looks like I was posing with the trophy animal I just killed, but I swear we didn't kill the beaver!

How did the beaver get to the edge of the road, you ask?

Dustin poked (okay, rolled) the beaver to the sidelines.  We didn't want it to get run over anymore (even though it was dead), and since a lot of animals are scavengers and eat roadkill, I didn't want any other animals to have to fight traffic for their food.  Tis the circle of life.  It's sad this beaver died, but at least he'll provide lots of other animals with food.

Yes, that beaver is freakin' huge.  Not quite bear size, but nearly the size of my 120 pound dog's torso.

And then we had to get the truck unstuck.  lol.  Luckily, Dad came (we weren't too far from the house) with chains and they hooked up Dustin's truck to Dad's Durango and pulled him out.  Muddy grass can be a bitch to get out of!

We went back to the house to help Dad put away the tools and they bonded over powerwinches and creative theories on how to get vehicles out of the mud.  Weirdos.  I just marveled at my beaver pics.

That's a lovely picture of you with the beaver haha. Poor thing. I'm glad you have such a unique passion. ;)

Some say "unique passion", others say "sick humor". :-)

I had a teacher in high school who collected pictures of roadkill. He's my inspiration. My friend Amy and I drove around (okay, I drove, because she didn't have her license yet) and took pictures of roadkill for him. We made him a nice string of garland out of it. :-)

I sooo would have brought him home with me, for the booones.

Maybe he rolled off into the woods there and will be eaten and decay and there will be some nice bones left? Mmmmmm booones.

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
ha ha. I think you're the only person I know who would ever say that. I love it!

I'm going to go back and visit later in hopes that there will be some good bones to collect. I'll keep you posted!

Woot!

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. :-( By the look of his injuries, I don't think he suffered. So that's good.

lol. I feel so bad for the beaver. By the look of his injuries, he probably didn't suffer, so at least that's good. And he'll be food for other creatures, so at least his body didn't go to waste.

Aww! I think we have part of the department of transportation that scoops up dead animals on the road. Anyone can call their hotline number to report a dead animal for pickup. It's great. I just hate seeing them in the road, especially if it's raining.

There's something oddly ironic about that...

The vet should have known better and buried the cat!

Are you sure it wasn't one of the animals that was driving the truck? Or maybe it was like Skippy..."What's that skip? You want me to run over that badger in my truck?"

i'm just surprised it's warm enough to allow Dustin to wear shorts and no socks.

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ha ha. It was an animal conspiracy. They had been out to get the beaver from the start...

It was pretty warm last night! When I told him we were going to go visit the beaver, he threw on his shorts (his jeans were in the wash) and slipped on some shoes. I had my Birkenstocks on and my feet weren't chilly at all! It was a very pleasant night to go roadkill hunting.

I know what you mean. Dustin and I went to the circus tonite and PETA people were out their protesting...

[identity profile] halfawakemoon.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap, that's... a big beaver. To be honest, I've never seen a real beaver before, so this is quite the learning experience.
Y'all are so sweet to move it out of the way. A beaver is still an animal, and it still has dignity!!!
Y'all are so funny, hahaha!!
I love the trophy photo and the one of Dustin 'poking' the beaver.
Hahaha!

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I had never seen a real beaver before, either! That's why I was so interested in seeing this one. It was much bigger than I thought it would be.

I couldn't bear to think about the creature getting hit again, so we figured the only thing to do would be to get it out of the middle of the road. Poor thing. :-( At least he won't get pulverized anymore.

When my sister and I were little, she had this poster called "Roadkill Cafe" hanging in her room, and I wanted to throw up everytime I saw it. Eck.

But I think it's nice that people like you do that :)

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother had that same poster. lol

I have a pair of rubber gloves in my car that I use just for picking up roadkill. Unfortunately, we were in Dustin's truck. So he used a stick.

Somewhere in a dam theres a family of beavers waiting for their father or mother to come home.....*tear rolls down cheek*

[identity profile] lizzie.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought about that, and I hope beavers live solitary lives. :-( I'd hate to think about his/her little family of beavers!

He/She is in a better place now. Beaver heaven.
