eohartman: (Ant Habitat)

It's been exactly 48 hours since I started my ant habitat! Time to see today's progress!

In the light:

In the dark:

With the exception of just a few short tunnels, all of their tunnels have been vertical. I'm wondering if they usually create vertical tunnels first and horizontal tunnels last, or even if there will be many horizontal tunnels at all. They've also been pretty keen on making tunnels as close to the edge of the habitat as possible. Maybe it's easier that way?

The back in the dark:

The "U" from yesterday now has a second tier to it, so the bottom part of the original "U" is a bypass between the two sides of a longer tunnel now:

They're about to join two tunnels together:

There is still only one dead ant, P. I haven't extracted her yet, as she's in the bottom of one of the tunnels. According to the ant habitat pamphlet, oftentimes the other ants will either bring the dead ant to the surface if she's stuck in a tunnel, or they'll create a separate little tunnel for her and bury her in it. They do this to protect the rest of the colony from bacteria, infection, and disease. How cool! So I don't want to interfere in their habitat yet- I want to wait and see if they'll do anything with the dead ant. Right now, they just keep walking over her crumpled body. :-(

More pictures tomorrow!
