Sekrit...Agent Man!
Sep. 15th, 2005 07:07 pmI got a phone call while I was in class today. It was a local number, but not one that I recognized, so I assumed it was a wildlife call. Nope.
It was a special agent, calling to schedule an appointment to discuss Dustin and his character.
I knew this was coming, and even though Dustin called me yesterday to warn me about it, I was still surprised they'd call so soon. I wasn't expecting the call for several more months.
A large part of Dustin's job includes working with sensitive, secret material. His network security job is with the third-largest army base in the U.S. I imagine that if he had the motive, he could easily take down the network and do serious harm, blah blah blah. He wouldn't, of course, but the opportunity is there. So to ensure he isn't a Bad Guy, he has to get his top secret clearance. That means they do a full, comprehensive background check on him. He has to give information on every place he's ever lived, give contacts for each place of residence, and answer many questions illegal activities (he's done none) and his involvement with overthrow-the-government organizations (no involvement there, either). This also includes contacting me to be a character reference for him, and there's a slight possibiilty they may do a background check on me at some point, as well, since we're getting married next year.
I called the special agent back and she'd like to meet with me for a bit next week. We've decided to meet up on Tuesday, although we're not sure about the time (she was in traffic when I called her back, and didn't have access to her calendar). On Tuesday she's also going over to our old apartment complex and talking to the leasing office. She also wants to talk to our old neighbors there, but we hardly had any contact with them, and what little contact we did have was mainly on my part, not Dustin's, so...even the woman above us who I became friends with doesn't know Dustin that well. I told the special agent that and she understood, saying "Especially living here in Atlanta, your neighbors change on a month-to-month basis". Yep. She'll probably come to Agnes to talk to me. I have no idea where we'll sit and talk, though. I may have to see if there's an empty classroom we can occupy. I doubt my dorm room would be an appropriate place to have such a conversation.
Of course, I'm still nervous about it. I know there's nothing to be nervous of, Dustin is a wonderful guy, but I'm still nervous about having an interview that could possibly cost him his job. Plus it's kinda creepy that Big Brother is on my doorstep.
