I encourage everyone to not forget about our animal friends during this time of devestation in Lousiana and Mississippi. If you can, please give a few bucks to the Humane Society of the United States Their donations go directly towards helping both domestic and wild animals that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. HSUS is working with the NWRA (National Wildlife Rehabiliators Association) to get all injured and orphaned wildlife to safety. Normally, it's against federal law to transport wildlife across state lines, but US Fish and Wildlife Services has made an acception during this crisis. We probably won't get extra wildlife here in Georgia (it's too far to trasport an already injured, sick, and stressed animal), but other surrounding state rehabbers are willing to help.

Every time I think about the animals affected by the hurricane, I start to cry. There are so many dogs and cats roaming the streets in search of food and clean water, and so many have already died, locked up in homes that have been destroyed by rushing water and high winds. We shouldn't forget about our animal friends, either. Even a $5 donation to HSUS will ensure an animal gets food and clean water for several days. Every little bit helps.
