(no subject)
Feb. 10th, 2005 12:18 pmI made the mistake of coming back to the apartment after my class this morning.
Jehovah's Witnesses climbed out of their car and surrounded me. There were only two of them, but they pounced on me like they were starving tigers and I was their first glimpse of fresh meat in a week. So I humored the two women and talked to them.
For 45 minutes.
Some of the discussion was about what their religion is about, etc (did you know only 144,000 people are going to go to heaven? What if there are more than 144,000 Jehovah's Witnesses? Some won't make it through the elimination round!). But then I figured I should at least have some fun with them, too. So I explained my interest with animals and expressed my concern on what happens to animals after they die. Do animals have souls? Do they go to heaven? Yes, they have souls ("they ARE souls"), but no, they don't go to heaven because instead, they stay here on earth to keep us humans (minus the 144,000 that go to heaven) company. Apparently animals only purpose is to serve humans. *rolls eyes*
And then I asked them why God is referred to with masculine pronouns. After all, if God is a spirit and can't really have any physical attributes, then why is God called "him"? According to them, it's because man (yes, "man", not "woman" or "human" or "person") is the closest thing to God. Men are put on earth to protect and support the women (the women are supposed to stay at home and spread the word of God *gag*). Men are also the strongest people we know on earth. Therefore, it's only appropriate that anything strong gets a masculine pronoun associated with it. *rolls eyes again* Interesting theory.
I told them that I'm pretty liberal with my beliefs, and so I'm not sure I'm a good fit for their denomination. I already know I'm not, but I didn't want to let them down (I have a fear of angering their people). But at the very least, I would read their pamphlets and call if I have any questions or want to talk about anything.
It's tempting to call and ask about their views on pro-choice people and women getting jobs outside of the home. :-) bwhahahahah.
