Happy One Month, Toby!

In your first month of life, you've:
- been born!
- had your tongue-tie and frenulum cut (ironic, since we chose not to circumcise) so you could nurse
- dropped six ounces from birthweight (6 lb, 12.5 oz) and regained it (plus three ounces!) by your two week appt.
- learned how to breastfeed (albeit with a nipple shield)
- learned how to fart and poop more effectively
- used a bottle (pumped breastmilk)
- traveled out of state (to Florida for Christmas)
- held your head up for several seconds at a time
- had your first babysitter (Aunt Heather on Dec. 15 - a mere 11 days after you were born!)
- smiled at us
- taken a bath in the bathtub with Mommy
- watched many episodes of Gunsmoke with Daddy
- celebrated your first major holiday, Christmas (with five different celebrations over the course of a week!)
- met many new people who have loved you even since before you were born - including your parents!

He now weighs 7 lbs, 11.5 oz - he's gained 15 ounces (one oz shy of a pound) in a month! Given the difficulties we had at first with breastfeeding and his tongue-tie, I consider this a success!

Yay for keeping a little human alive for a whole month, way to go!

I had to go look up frenulums as I only know of them in relation to the penis. I can't imagine what the penile frenulum would have to do with nursing, so I assume it was an oral one that he had cut?

Glad to hear his digestive issues are getting better!

Toby looks thrilled about that Christmas tree picking:-P Is that your SBP sling? I was actually going to watch the DVD that came with mine tonight so I at least have some sense of what I'm supposed to do. The extent of my practice has been sticking a really large stuffed bear in there the day it got delivered. I'm sure that bear was not safely or securely in it, so I should probably figure it out for real before a human goes in!

The look on Dustin's face in that pic is so sweet. :-)

Ha, yes, it's the oral frenulum that was cut! It's the little piece of skin that connects the upper lip to the gum line. His was too tight, which meant that his upper lip couldn't flare out like it's supposed to in order to latch onto the breast properly.

Yes, that's my SBP sling. I love it! Dustin hates the color so he refuses to use it, but I've used it many times already. I really only place him in there the one way - I think there are other ways to use it, and I just haven't figured them out yet (I need to go back and watch the DVD, too).

The look on Dustin's face makes my heart melt. He is so smitten with Toby!

He's still so little! He looks a LOT like Dustin.

Well done for overcoming the tongue-tie issues! Another friend had to get her baby's tongue-tie clipped last year too - apparently nursing was a nightmare until she finally managed to get a doctor to actually listen to her & then as soon it was clipped, everything was fine.

(That sling is GORGEOUS, btw! Where did you get it?)

Thankfully, my SIL had warned me about tongue-tie, so I identified it on Toby even before we were discharged from the hospital (24 hours after he was born). Then it took us a couple of days to see the ped, who then got us to an ENT... it was four days until it was clipped, but he's doing great, now!

The sling came from Sleeping Baby Productions: http://www.sleepingbaby.net/ I love it!

It's been way busier than I expected it to be! Sometimes I get frustrated because I feel I should be more productive, but then I remember that I'm productive in a completely different way - raising a human! :-)

And that is the best way to be productive :)

Such skills for a one month old! Nursing AND farting? You've truly got a genius baby over there. :) (Seriously, who ever knew that FARTING was a skill to learn? Babies are such lumps when they are born!).

Totally this!! And, hey, some pretty advanced skills for his parents in there, too! :D Breastfeeding is hard, yo! Bathing a baby's pretty challenging, too; they're so squirmy and slippery when wet! And travelling with an infant isn't to be sneezed at, either! What an awesome family! :D

OMG! He's so teeeeeny!! I love it!! :D

He's also amazingly well-traveled and talented (pooping AND farting!) for a one-month-old! I can't believe he's already a month, really -- it feels like just yesterday Dustin was on Facebook announcing you were in labor. ;)

Congratulations on one happy month! May you have a lifetime more of them! <3

I love these pictures so much! :) He's so tiny! :)

So awesome that you're posting like this - including what happened during the month. I'd started early on recording things in a set place for his scrapbook but then ended up putting it all over the place and now I'm struggling to go back and find those records. Wish I'd done what you did. :)

(Plus it will help when you put it all into his baby book!).
